Maiden pole for Timmy Hansen!

03/07/2011

This time, the Group B drivers were the first to take to the track for the weekend’s second qualifying session for the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup on the Hungaroring.

Stoffel Vandoorne (KTR) went for it almost immediately and took first place with a lap in 1m 44.934s ahead of Norman Nato (R-Ace Grand Prix) and Robin Frijns (Josef Kaufmann Racing). Vandoorne upped the pace and was the first to break the 1m 44s barrier. But just before the chequered flag was hung out, both Paul-Loup Chatin (Tech 1 Racing) and Frijns beat his time. With a lap in 1m 43.376s, Frijns, who is the man in form at the moment, ended the session in first place.

In Group A, Javier Tarancon (Tech 1 Racing) launched the battle for pole aiming to beat Frijn’s time. At half-distance he was joined by his team-mate, Miki Weckström, at the top of the time sheets.

Oscar Andrès Tunjo (Josef Kaufmann Racing), who is very much in his element on this circuit, took the fight to the Spaniard who hit back with a time of 1m 43.273s. But it was not good enough as both Alex Riberas (Epic Racing) and Timmy Hansen (Interwetten.com Junior Team) went quicker. The Swede’s lap in 1m 43.248s gave him his maiden pole in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup!

Quotes

Timmy Hansen: “Since the start of the season, we’ve know that we have what it takes to put on a good performance, but we haven’t been lucky in qualifying. One day, it was a yellow flag, another, a small mistake or a technical glitch. Today everything worked like a dream. I’m very happy with my pole position but I really need a podium finish.”

Robin Frijns: “I took a little time to warm up my tyres as the track was really cold this morning. We’ve had a quick car since the start of the weekend and we again got the best out of it this morning.”

Alex Riberas: “This year the level’s incredibly high! To score a good result you’ve got to have everything perfectly set up and not make the slightest mistake. I need a result today. I’ve got a good car and I’ll do my best to achieve it.”
