Maiden pole for Daniil Kvyat!

19/06/2011

Summary of the qualifications for race 2 of the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup

Group B

It was raining this morning on the Nürburgring so the drivers had no choice but to shod grooved tyres.

In Group B, the first one to take to the track, Javier Tarancon (Tech 1 Racing) and Daniil Kvyat (Koiranen Motorsport) set the tempo. They swapped the quickest times, and then Yann Zimmer (Arta Engineering) and Come Ledogar (R-Ace Grand Prix) got involved in the battle for pole.

The outcome was decided on the last lap when Kvyat set the quickest lap in Group B in 2m 14.043s, almost 2 seconds faster than Norman Nato.

Group A

Like the drivers in Group B, those in Group A took a few laps to find their marks on a completely soaked track. Carlos Sainz Jr (Koiranen Motorsport) and Steffel Vandourne (KTR) went to the top of the time sheets, while Paul-Loup Chatin (Tech 1 Racing) damaged the rear end of his car after colliding with Alex Riberas (Epic Racing). Race Control hung out the red flag when Roman Mavlanov became stranded in a gravel trap.

Sainz Jr was quickest in Group A in 2m 17.973s but was slower than his team-mate, Daniil Kvyat. It was the Russian’s maiden pole position in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup.

Quote

Daniil Kvyat: “I was amazed by the car’s grip in the rain. The team did a great job. I soon felt at home and that helped me to go quicker than everybody else. Whether it’s wet or dry doesn’t make any difference to me, I love all conditions!”
